Smokies Baseball Minor League

ORMER SMOKIE POWERS CARDINALS

SEVIERVILLE, Tenn. Yadier Molina, who played for the Smokies in 2003, drove the first pitch he saw from Mets’ reliever Aaron Heilman over the left field wall to send the Cardinals to their second World Series in the past three years.

The Puerto Rican native has played in all eleven games for the St. Louis Cardinals this postseason and is batting .333, with two home runs and seven RBIs. Yadier was a fourth round selection of the 2000 First Year Amateur Player Draft by the St. Louis Cardinals. In 2005, at age 22, he became the second youngest catcher to start for a National League team on opening day since Jason Kendall did so for the Pirates at the age of 21 in 1996.

Molina played in 104 games for the Smokies in 2003 and helped the team to a second half divisional title and a playoff appearance. He batted .275 on the year with two homeruns and 51 RBIs and was a member of the 2003 Eastern Division all-star team.

He is one of eight former Smokies on the Cardinals active roster. The list also includes: Chris Carpenter, Tyler Johnson, Anthony Reyes, Brad Thompson, Josh Kinney, Chris Duncan, and manager Tony LaRussa.

Yadier is the younger brother of Anaheim Angels catcher Jose Molina and Bengie Molina of the Toronto Blue Jays.

Tennessee Museum of Aviation

The Tennessee Museum of Aviation occupies a new 50,000 sq. ft. facility located right beside the airport’s 5,500 ft. runway. This unique location makes bringing aviation history to life possible as airworthy vintage aircraft perform impromptu flybys for visitors. The hangar floor alone is 35,000 sq. ft. and the hangar is heated in winter.

Browse the museum’s air-conditioned artifacts gallery that traces aviation history from before the Wright Brothers. See the Gen. Jimmy Doolittle Medal of Honor, thousands of historic artifacts and Tennessee’s Aviation Hall of Fame.

Historic aircraft on tour frequently visit the museum. Some provide visitors with walk-through tours as well as a way to ride along on a historic flight. Two Warbird Weekend events each year attract lots of visiting airplanes providing extraordinary photo opportunities and exciting formation flybys.

The FLYING SPIRIT GIFT GALLERY is packed with aviation books, art, gifts and souvenirs. This is probably the largest and most unusual selection of aviation memorabilia in the Southeast.

Forbidden Caverns

Tennessee is home to the most caves in the United States, with over 8,350 caves registered to date. Forbidden Caverns, located in Sevierville, is one of America’s most spectacular caverns. Visitors are provided with an entertaining and educational tour past sparkling formations, towering natural chimneys, numerous grottos and a crystal clear stream. Special lighting effects, a stereophonic sound presentation and well-trained tour guides combine to make this a most enjoyable experience.

Forbidden Caverns

The trails are well-lighted, with handrails at all necessary points. Hundreds of years ago, Forbidden Caverns was known to the Eastern Woodland Indians who roamed East Tennessee’s forests and mountains in search of good hunting grounds. The cave was used as a shelter in the winter and the cave river provided a constant supply of water. Scientists believe the source of the water to be an underground lake located beneath English Mountain, now famous for it’s spring water.

Forbidden Caverns 2

Flint or chert is found here in limited quantities and was used to create arrowheads, knives and scrapers. The cave also contains many unique calcite formations that are still growing and boasts the largest wall of rare cave onyx or dripstones known to exist. An interesting Indian legend explains the fate of an Indian princess who was lost in a “hollow mountain of two streams”…”which is forbidden”. During the early twenties and until 1943, the cave was used to make moonshine.

The constant water supply and the isolated location was ideal for Moonshiner’s to make their homemade whiskey. In 1964, a group of business and professional men began the planning and vast undertaking of opening this natural attraction to the public. After 3 years of excavation and development, Forbidden Caverns was opened in June 1967.

Floyd Garrett"s Muscle Car Museum

Definition of a Muscle Car:

“A car having a high performance engine”

Floyd Garrett,

Owner Muscle Car Museum

It sounds so brutally simple. Yet that is the essence of the more than 90 ground-pounding, fire-breathing examples of American automotive culture to be found at Floyd Garrett’s Muscle Car Museum! Having opened April 26, 1996 and located in the beautiful Smoky Mountain town of Sevierville, Tennessee the museum represents the dream of one man – Floyd Garrett

Muscle Pic 1

Floyd hails from Fernandina Beach Florida, where he built a highly successful trucking company by hauling wood chips from local lumberyards to the paper mills in the area. After becoming financially secure, he began finding and buying the vintage muscle cars he remembered from his youth – focusing on the rare and unusual. His collection began in 1975 with a black 1970 Chevelle and has grown since.

Muscle Pic 2

The 50′s, 60′s and 70′s were a unique time in the American automobile industry … the golden era of the “muscle car”. Experience one of the largest, and most incredible collection of American Muscle Cars in the nation.

Nestled in the foothills of the Great Smokey Mountains, we provide wonderful trail riding memories. Views up to 40 miles. Our scenic trails wind along the shore of 33,000 acre Douglas Lake and through Mountain Valleys. There are several points where one can get a view of the Valley of The Cherokee. The Dollywood Foundation releases young Eagles back to Nature in this remote area. Keep your eyes open for them and the many other birds and wildlife along the trails.

Really, why would anyone ride in downtown smog and traffic noise when you can drive a few minutes to a wilderness area and ride where Indians lived along with early pioneers.
