We start with high quality equipment, energetic and knowledgeable guides, and combine them with your spirit for adventure to give you a great trip down the river.

As you may know, rapids rank on a scale of one to six. The Pigeon River has rapids at levels three and four. This guarantees lots of spray and excitement, suitable for beginners all the way to experienced rafters. Just picture yourself paddling through the rapids.

We’ll spend an hour and a half on the river. This gives you time to get familiar with the way we navigate through the rapids. Our rafts hold up to seven people and children should be at least three for most courses and on some, eight years of age. Feel free to call us with any questions or safety concerns. We can’t wait to give you a great ride down the Pigeon.

Dinosaur Walk Museum (CLOSED)

Come face-to-face with a Tyrannosaurus Rex! Count the spikes on a Stegosaurus tail. Stand next to one of the most common predators, the Allosaurus. Learn to spell “Parasaurolophus,” the largest duck-billed dinosaur.

At the Dinosaur Walk Museum , our dinosaurs aren’t fossils or bones. They are life-si e sculptures. You and your family can see one of the world’s largest collections of prehistoric animals, ranging from the two-story-high Tyrannosaurus Rex to a tiny 12-inch tall Microraptor. Other exhibits include giant sea li ards, flying reptiles, and replicas of bones, skulls, and skeletons of ancient prehistoric creatures.

Our museum also features a movie theater showing high-definition educational films that bring dinosaurs to life. We also have activities for children of all ages, including a dinosaur fossil dig and movies about dinosaurs. We also have a Kid’s Club. Bring your kids, your parents, your grandparents, and friends. There’s something for everyone at the Dinosaur Walk Museum.

Dinosaur Walk Museum 2

The dinosaurs at the Dinosaur Walk Museum are created by some of the world’s greatest paleo-artists. “Paleo” means ancient or prehistoric, meaning the artists re-create creatures from prehistoric times. The dinosaur sculptures are called “flesh replications.”

These artists use actual fossils, footprints, and other information to create the dinosaurs. The skeletons of the dinosaurs are reproduced using wood. The wooden skeleton is then covered in clay and sculpted to the dinosaur’s actual si e.

For information on how the muscles should look, (like how much muscle mass a large animal would need to move), the artists base their designs on modern-day animals. Then the clay models are molded and reproduced in fiberglass, assembled and painted, becoming some of the most realistic dinosaurs ever produced.

The dinosaurs are made the actual si e that they were when they roamed the earth. Production began on some of the pieces over a decade ago. Transporting the dinosaurs requires careful packing of full-si e semi trucks. The larger dinosaurs are put together, like a giant pu le, at the museums.

Smoky Mountains Springfest Celebration in The Great Smoky Mountains

Smoky Mountain SpringfestThere’s almost no lovelier place to celebrate the emerging beauties of spring than the Smoky Mountains Springfest, held annually between March and June in Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg, Tennessee.

The Smoky Mountains Springfest 2013 runs from March 12 to June 2. All kinds of fun, family-friendly events are scheduled during these beautiful weeks in the Smokies.

The annual Great Smoky Easter Arts and Craft show is held at the Gatlinburg Convention Center during Easter weekend, this year the last weekend in March. Enjoy the beautiful wares put on display by the local arts and crafts community. The Gatlinburg Ministerial Association also leads a sunrise service on Easter morning, with a buffet breakfast at the Ober restaurant afterwards.

April brings opportunities to enjoy classic cars and authentic mountain music. The Pigeon Forge Rod Run, a huge classic car show, is held April 19-21, the same weekend as the Music of the Mountains event in Gatlinburg.

If it’s nature and the outdoors you especially enjoy, you’ll want to head to the mountains in late April for the Spring Wildflower Pilgrimage. Held in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, this nearly week long event includes outdoor nature walks, drives, and photography tours as well as indoor learning opportunities in many places in Gatlinburg. This year the Pilgrimage will be held from April 23-27. You can register in person at the Mills Conference Center in Gatlinburg or pre-register online. This is the popular event’s 63rd year.

If you work up a good appetite while enjoying the gorgeous local flora and fauna, you might want to take in Gatlinburg’s Ribfest and Wings, a street fair held during the same week as the Wildflower Pilgrimage.

If you can’t make it in April, head to the Smokies in May. You’ll still find delicious food as well as terrific traditional music at the Bloomin’ BBQ and Bluegrass event in nearby Sevierville, held this year on May 17 and 18.

Nature, crafts, music, good food and fellowship – the Smoky Mountains has it all during their annual Springfest.

Sweet Fanny Adams Theater

An evening at Sweet Fanny Adams Theater is an experience you will never forget. The unique style of shows presented in this 1890s style theater are a combination of Old English music hall, American vaudeville, Monty Python, and Broadway musical comedy. The original shows are quick-witted sensations filled with the broadest of humor and the silliest of slapstick all guaranteed to be unlike anything you’ve seen before. Since opening in Gatlinburg in 1977, Sweet Fanny Adams Theater has been recogni ed as one of the most innovative and unusual professional theaters in the country and was named an historical treasure by the city of Gatlinburg.

Two completely different shows are presented each season and are alternated nightly. Our multi-talented performers are all well-seasoned professionals of stage, screen, TV, and night clubs. Each show they take turns adding their uniqueness to the inevitable comic mayhem for which Sweet Fanny Adams Theater is renowned.

The creative force behind the theatrical magic at Sweet Fanny Adams is the wonderfully off-beat talents of Pat and Don MacPherson. They have written, produced, and directed over 32 original musical comedies. Their shows have played in over forty professional theaters throughout the country including New York, Los Angeles, Atlantic City and an over two year run of their musical Tom Jones at the Desert Inn in Las Vegas.

Sweet Fanny Adams theater 2

On Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays the show will be “A Knight’s Tale and Other Acts of Superficial Foolishness” , an original musical fairy tale adventure of brave knights and maidens, misguided royalty, and a dueling scene never to be equaled, nor dared, on any stage. And, as promised the Finale chosen Number One by you, our faithful audience friends . . . The Pirate Song -”I Want To Sing and Dance”.

On Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays the show will be “That’s Ridiculous! 30 Years of Hilarious Musical Comedy . . . All In One Night”, a fun-filled tribute to old time music hall entertainment with the best full-of-nonsense comedy routines, songs, and dances that have graced the Sweet Fanny Adams Theater stage for the past 30 Seasons plus . . . the ever popular Classical Paper Dance.

Tennessee Museum of Aviation

The Tennessee Museum of Aviation occupies a new 50,000 sq. ft. facility located right beside the airport’s 5,500 ft. runway. This unique location makes bringing aviation history to life possible as airworthy vintage aircraft perform impromptu flybys for visitors. The hangar floor alone is 35,000 sq. ft. and the hangar is heated in winter.

Browse the museum’s air-conditioned artifacts gallery that traces aviation history from before the Wright Brothers. See the Gen. Jimmy Doolittle Medal of Honor, thousands of historic artifacts and Tennessee’s Aviation Hall of Fame.

Historic aircraft on tour frequently visit the museum. Some provide visitors with walk-through tours as well as a way to ride along on a historic flight. Two Warbird Weekend events each year attract lots of visiting airplanes providing extraordinary photo opportunities and exciting formation flybys.

The FLYING SPIRIT GIFT GALLERY is packed with aviation books, art, gifts and souvenirs. This is probably the largest and most unusual selection of aviation memorabilia in the Southeast.

Smoky Mountain Whitewater Rafting On A River Regulated By Dam Releases

Smoky Mountain Whitewater RaftingPigeon Forge Tennessee is the ideal location for a Smoky Mountain family vacation. This area has so much to offer tourists, everything to make your trip an unforgettable experience. Families can choose among hotels, condos, or private cabins for lodging. During the day you can stroll through the unique shops selling locally crafted items. Then you can enjoy a meal of wonderful down home southern cooking served in the numerous restaurants, pancake houses, or dinner shows, but what truly sets Pigeon Forge apart from other tourist spots is the amount of adventures being offered.

Smoky Mountain Whitewater Rafting is the perfect Smoky Mountain adventure for families. Those as young as three can participate, due to the several different levels of rafting offered. On the Pigeon River Class I, II, III, and IV are available. This is a pretty unique opportunity, and it’s only possible due to the fact that the river current is regulated by Walters Dam. Located on the Tennessee and North Carolina border, it is visible from I-40 east. The river has a steady flow that increases as the dam releases water. One can actually see the calm river slowly turn into the ideal white water raging river. Because releases are scheduled, you can book rafting experiences accordingly.

The Upper Pigeon River is where you’ll find the thrilling Class IV rafting, complete with churning waters guaranteed to get your adrenaline going. This is the most exciting white water rafting available in the Smoky Mountains.

Not all of us are thrill seekers, but we still want to have an amazing adventure on the river. That is why excursions are offered to those without experience in the Lower River. Here the waters are a little calmer, but still give you that rush you’re looking for. Rafting guides are certified and will do everything possible to ensure your trip is safe. This makes it a great opportunity for children to get a taste of rafting. No experience is required, you don’t have to know how to raft or even swim.

No matter what your skill level is, there is sure to be a Pigeon River rafting experience tailor made for you. These family adventures are something you’ll talk about long after your back home. What a thrilling way to experience the Smoky Mountains.

Forbidden Caverns

Tennessee is home to the most caves in the United States, with over 8,350 caves registered to date. Forbidden Caverns, located in Sevierville, is one of America’s most spectacular caverns. Visitors are provided with an entertaining and educational tour past sparkling formations, towering natural chimneys, numerous grottos and a crystal clear stream. Special lighting effects, a stereophonic sound presentation and well-trained tour guides combine to make this a most enjoyable experience.

Forbidden Caverns

The trails are well-lighted, with handrails at all necessary points. Hundreds of years ago, Forbidden Caverns was known to the Eastern Woodland Indians who roamed East Tennessee’s forests and mountains in search of good hunting grounds. The cave was used as a shelter in the winter and the cave river provided a constant supply of water. Scientists believe the source of the water to be an underground lake located beneath English Mountain, now famous for it’s spring water.

Forbidden Caverns 2

Flint or chert is found here in limited quantities and was used to create arrowheads, knives and scrapers. The cave also contains many unique calcite formations that are still growing and boasts the largest wall of rare cave onyx or dripstones known to exist. An interesting Indian legend explains the fate of an Indian princess who was lost in a “hollow mountain of two streams”…”which is forbidden”. During the early twenties and until 1943, the cave was used to make moonshine.

The constant water supply and the isolated location was ideal for Moonshiner’s to make their homemade whiskey. In 1964, a group of business and professional men began the planning and vast undertaking of opening this natural attraction to the public. After 3 years of excavation and development, Forbidden Caverns was opened in June 1967.

Floyd Garrett"s Muscle Car Museum

Definition of a Muscle Car:

“A car having a high performance engine”

Floyd Garrett,

Owner Muscle Car Museum

It sounds so brutally simple. Yet that is the essence of the more than 90 ground-pounding, fire-breathing examples of American automotive culture to be found at Floyd Garrett’s Muscle Car Museum! Having opened April 26, 1996 and located in the beautiful Smoky Mountain town of Sevierville, Tennessee the museum represents the dream of one man – Floyd Garrett

Muscle Pic 1

Floyd hails from Fernandina Beach Florida, where he built a highly successful trucking company by hauling wood chips from local lumberyards to the paper mills in the area. After becoming financially secure, he began finding and buying the vintage muscle cars he remembered from his youth – focusing on the rare and unusual. His collection began in 1975 with a black 1970 Chevelle and has grown since.

The 50′s, 60′s and 70′s were a unique time in the American automobile industry … the golden era of the “muscle car”. Experience one of the largest, and most incredible collection of American Muscle Cars in the nation.

Ripley"s Aquarium of the Smokies

Gatlinburg, Tennessee. Ripley’s Aquarium and Gatlinburg Mass Transit Center together represent a $70 million cooperative project between the city and the entertainment company. The 115,000 square foot, 1.3 million gallon Ripley’s Aquarium is home to 10-foot sharks, 8,000 exotic fish, and the world’s longest aquarium tunnel. The world-class attraction is expected to draw more than 1.5 million visitors per year.

The aquarium represents an $18 million investment by the City of Gatlinburg for city infrastructure work and a $48 million investment by Ripley’s Entertainment, for a total of over $65 million.

There are wonders of nature like the giant Pacific octopus and the Japanese spider crab, the largest crustacean in the world. The aquarium also boasts its share of undersea “tough guys”, like moray eels, jellyfish and the giant red-bellied piranha. In Shark Lagoon, some of the ocean’s most wondrous species swim into view, including sand, black tip and bonnethead sharks.

The centerpiece of Ripley’s Aquarium of the Smokies is the world’s longest underwater aquarium tunnel. The clear acrylic tunnel is submerged in a million gallons of water, and guests are transported through it along a 340-foot moving walkway. You’ll find yourself safely surrounded by most of the aquarium’s residents as they swim all around you, seemingly close enough to touch.

Tours of Ripley’s Aquarium are self-guided, and the facility is laid out in a way that takes you along a planned route, but still leaves room for you to stop, look or backtrack at your discretion.

As part of its mission to combine education with entertainment, the aquarium operates on site classrooms where staff educators use lectures and hands-on demonstrations to expand visitor knowledge of the sea and its residents. One innovation that’s sure to be a hit with visiting youth groups is “Sleep With The Sharks”, an overnight field trip during which kids can bring their sleeping bags and camp out in the underwater walkway.

According to Karl Thomas, Director of Marketing, Ripley’s Aquarium of the Smokies is planning special group events throughout the year and is capable of hosting themed parties. Packages that combine meals and tours are also available, giving group guests unique feeding experiences. They might dine in the Jules Verne room, with its own window into Stingray Bay, or enjoy a meal in the Veranda, the aquarium’s upscale restaurant that offers dining along the Little Pigeon River, or grab a quick meal in its Feeding Fren y restaurant.

The number and variety of aquatic species assembled for Ripley’s Aquarium of the Smokies is huge, so much so that Frank Bulman, director of husbandry, doesn’t even ha ard a guess. “We span the globe -from South America to Japan, to Australia to the Caribbean and both coasts of the States. I think we’re as diverse as any aquarium in the world. Here is a glance at some of the Aquarium residents:

Tropical Rainforest:

Poison dartfrogs get their name from the fact that they’re highly poisonous in their native habitat, so much so that natives poison their blowgun darts by rubbing them on the skin of the frogs. There are several species. They’re colorful, some are fluorescent lime green with black, some bright yellow and black, some blue and some red and blue. You’ll think they’re not real until you see them hop.”

Freshwater stingrays, a large piranha exhibit, giant red-tail catfish and green iguanas are among other species found in the Ama on Rainforest exhibit.

Ripley

Coral Reef:

Lots of “pretty fish” are in this exhibit, colorful angelfish and butterflyfish, as well as various wrasses-which change colors.

Gallery of the Seas:

Little jewels in this gallery include seahorses and seadragons, with leaf-like appendages that resemble the seaweed in which it lives.

The gallery is also the domain of the octopus, both the giant Pacific octopus and a cuttlefish, a squid-resembling animal that flashes different colors. Jellyfish, living coral and venomous fish such as the lionfish and scorpion fish also reside in the numerous small aquarium exhibits.

Other displays include Japanese spider crabs, the largest crustacean in the world which reaches up to 10 feet in leg span.

Dangerous Reef:

In this largest exhibit are the sharks. The sand tigers with long fang-like teeth, the sleek sand bar shark with its high dorsal fin, and the bottom-dwelling nurse sharks which seem to suck in their food are close enough to touch. Snappers, jacks, tarpon, porkfish and others making up a crossection of reef life populate the Dangerous Reef.

Ripley

Other Exhibits:

In Monterey Wharf, a kaleidoscope of color, includes the beautiful but deadly sea anemones, the starfish known as bat stars and rockfishes.

Sting Ray Bay features several different kinds of stingrays, the flat-bodied creatures that can range in si e from 5 inches to 10 feet across and weigh more than 660 pounds. Want to pet one? You’ll have a chance to at Sting Ray Bay.

The Discovery Center will provide children an opportunity to examine horseshoe crabs, more a spider than a crab, and one of the oldest living species. Children and adults will also be able to get up-close views of such oddities as puffers, so named because they puff up to increase in si e, trumpetfish, which swim upside down, and deep sea isopods, found 2000 feet below the sea.

The opening marks Ripley’s second foray into the aquarium field. The company’s first aquarium opened 3 and a half years ago in Myrtle Beach and has become South Carolina’s most visited attraction, according to Bob Masterson, Ripley’s President. “I think we do a better job at building aquariums than anybody,” he continued. “You get more value per square foot, or per gallon of water-whichever way you want to look at it.” Masterson said Ripley’s officials are dedicated to providing the highest quality of care for the sea creatures. “We do everything we can to care for and feed the animals properly,” he said. “We also help in the effort to save the green sea turtles we have here,” he said. “We are very sensitive to environmental issues.”

Masterson said he expects the aquarium to attract about 1.5 million visitors annually and possible more. “We should do great here.”

The aquarium is only the latest in a series of significant investments by Ripley Entertainment in Gatlinburg. “Ripley’s has more invested in Gatlinburg than in any other city”, said Steve Ellis, Ripley’s marketing consultant, estimating its total investment at up to $60 million.

Ripley’s Believe It or Not Museum has been a part of the city’s scene for 30 years. Other properties are Ripley’s Moving Theater and Ripley’s Haunted Adventure.
